In a program run by the Spanish Foundation for Innovation and Future Health (FIPSE) the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has selected an IGTP project for its Mentoring Program in Biomedicine. The project is to develop a family of hydrogels to answer unmet needs in digestive endoscopies and avoid complications in endoscopic procedures
Scientists warn that a widespread lack of iodine threatens brain development in children. Iodine insufficiency is one of easiest public health problems to solve, even though it affects so many people worldwide. According to experts, the key to preventing iodine insufficiency is consumption of adequate amounts in a sustained and continued way. The " Krakow Declaration on Iodine" created by the EUthyroid Project calls on those responsible for European policy to support measures to eliminate iodine insufficiency.
The Innate Immunity Group, led by Maria Rosa Sarrias has published two papers on their work on how cancer cells subtly retrain the body's immune system and subvert its natural defences. In this case the group has worked on liver cancer, in conjunction with the Childhood Liver Cancer Group (C-Log), Marga Sala (Hepatology Unit, Department of Gastroenterology, Germans Trias Hospital) and doctors from a large number of hospitals, but they believe the mechanism may be important for the prognosis of many different cancers.
Researchers from the Heart Disease Research Group at the Germans Trias I Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) and researchers from the Spanish Biomedical Research Network for Cardiovascular Disease (CIBERCV) have analysed the degree of shortening of telomeres and its correlation with progression of cardiac insufficiency (CI) over a year. The Neuromuscular and Neuropaediatrics Research Group at the IGTP particpates in the largest study of McArdle’s disease patients carried out in Spain. The study, published in BMC Genomics, concluded that the best therapy is to adopt a supervised exercise regime.

Researchers from the Immunology of Diabetes research group of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) have confirmed, in human cells, that liposomes designed as immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D) are a valid strategy to arrest the autoimmune attack characteristic of this disease. They have done so in a preclinical study demonstrating the tolerogenic effect of these liposomes on cells of the immune system of patients with T1D. The results have been published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology.

Tanya Vavouri, researcher at the IGTP and Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute is one of the nominees for the Vanguardia de la Ciencia award, for the study showing that environment affects genetics and can be retained for generations. The vote is open to everyone, scientist or not, until February 28.
